Warm Disease Summary

A. TYPES OF WARM DISEASE:

1) Warm Disease without Dampness

a) Includes seasonal affect ( nature of presentation is determined by “climate” of season

- Wind Warmth (Wind Heat ) Winter or spring

- Spring Warmth ( Lurking Heat or winter cold enters Construction in spring when Liver energy arises)

- Autumn Dryness ( Wei level heat that can acutely damage fluids)

b) Warm Toxin- infectious not seasonal

2) Warm Disease with Dampness

a) Summerheat- Heat combined with dampness ; severe attack, sudden onset

- Attacks Spleen/Stomach,

- Summer Heat Heat has heat predominant and appears as Qi level symptoms. Rapid onset. High fever, profuse perspiration, etc.,

- Summer Heat dampness has either predominant dampness or attacks weak spleen. Progresses more slowly and shows up at Wei Level first

- Summer heat readily injures fluids and source Qi

- Often combines with exogenous dampness- Summerheat descends and dampness steams upward

b) Damp Heat

- Develops slowly and has a prolonged course

- Affects mainly stomach and spleen

- causes stagnation of Qi and blocks the clear Yang from Rising

3) Lurking Heat ( emerges from within Construction

-Arises suddenly with exterior signs like aversion to cold

-Exterior Pathogen can not be driven out by Righteous Qi; arises with Exterior attack in another season

a) Spring warmth ( Heat enters construction through the Liver)

b) Summer Heat-

-Emerges in Autumn or winter

-Can resemble Shao Yang Presentation of alternating chills and fever

-generally serious and protracted

4) Warm Toxin ( “pestilential”)

- Infectious, can occur in any season
- Can affect one part of body creating local redness, swelling or sores
- or entire body including interior and exterior and affects QI and Blood

B. Four Levels

1. Wei level

Treatment: Release Exterior and resolve toxin

2. Qi Level

Treatment: Clear Heat from Qi Level, regulate function, resolve toxin

3. Nutritive Level

Treatment: Clear Heat from the blood, resolve toxin, Nourish Yin, Calm Shen

4. Blood Level

Treatment: Clear Heat from Blood, resolve toxin, nourish Yin, Calm Shen

Restore consciousness, stop bleeding, etc.,

C. Triple Burner

1. Upper Burner

Lungs: Heat in Wei Level or Qi Level

Pericardium: Heat enters construction

2. Middle Burner

Spleen/ Stomach: Qi Level Heat, or lurking heat enters Qi or Construction, Summerheat attacks and presents at Wei or Qi level

Liver: Lurking Spring Warmth enters construction
GB: Damp Warmth disease creates Qi level presentation

3. Lower Burner

Kidney: Nutritive or Blood level

A patient has edema with puffy face and eyelids, bright and shiny skin, decreased urination, and chills with fever. The tongue has a thin white coating. The pulse is slippery and fast. What is the pattern?

A. Deficient Spleen and Kidney Yang
B. External Wind with Internal Water
C. Deficient Kidney Qi
D. Bladder Cold-Damp

External Wind with Internal Water.....puffy face and eyelids (wind), edema(internal water) decreased urination(internal water), thin white coating consistent with external pattern

Not Deficient Spleen and Kidney Yang or Kidney Qi or Bladder Cold- Damp (internal patterns)

“ELECTRO MERIDIAN IMAGING” may be referred to as Contemporary Asian Medicine (CAM) which is technologically advanced electronic diagnosis and treatment.

"Since the early 1950’s, acupuncture diagnosis has taken on an entirely new dimension throughout the world with the discovery of “Ryodoraku” by Dr. Yoshio Nakatani of Japan.
Eough Chinese pulse diagnosis is considered both classic and traditional, its explanation is scientifically unproven and questionable at best. Get fact that the findings are purely and strictly subjective, the question remains, is the practitioner of pulse diagnosis who also prescribes an acupuncture treatment based upon their interpretation of the pulse, actually treating the patients real and primary problem? Since it is not unusual to observe an individual patient being evaluated by several pulse diagnosticians and be given as many different diagnoses as there are evaluators, one must question this form of ancient diagnosis. We wonder if pulse diagnosis has a place and will survive into the new millennium? "

Electronic evaluation of the body Yuan points do not determine the specific 28 pulse characteristics which must be ascertained in proper pulse diagnosis. It does however, determine if an individual meridian is excess or deficient in comparison to the entire meridian system of the 12 primary meridians.

Unfortunately, the majority of contemporary pulse practitioners only recognize and concern themselves with under six pulse qualities as opposed to the historic 28.

When one finds an elevated or deficient meridian on Ryodoraku, the treatment approach is one of tonification or sedation, to specific acupuncture points known to replenish or deplete biomagnetic energy to create balance in the meridians.

Electronic measurements are ascertained by examining the 24 specific Yuan points of the wrist and ankles for only three seconds per point.

One of the most significant discoveries of Ryodoraku was the discovery of split meridians.

For example, in pulse diagnosis, the pulse of the Spleen meridian is always in the right wrist, where as the Gallbladder, Kidney and Liver is always in the left wrist.

When one ascertains a diagnosis from the pulse qualities, it can reveal a multitude of factors, however, it cannot and does not reveal what the Ryodoraku has discovered.

TCM Diagnosis Methods

TCM Diagnosis Methods exam human body is an organic entity. The local pathological changes may affect the whole body. The pathological changes of the internal organs may reflect on the body surface, so tcm diagnostic methods include four basic methods: inspection, auscultation (listening for five element sounds in the voice tone), olfaction (listening for the five element sounds in voice tone), inquiry (patient history and current state) and palpation (pulse examination).

The case history, symptoms, and signs gained through those four diagnostic methods are analyzed and generalized to find the causes, nature, and interrelations of the disease, and to provide evidence for the further differentiation of syndromes.

The four diagnostic methods are therefore indispensable and important steps in the differentiation and treatment of syndromes

Treating Coughs and Phlegmy Obstructions: Perilla Seed - Su Zi

According to TCM medical principles, perilla seed functions are to keep qi flowing downward which prevent coughing, resolve difficult breathing, and relax the bowels. It has a pungent taste and warm temperture. Perilla seed resolves counterflow problems that support the Lung and Large Intestine channels. Its functions are to keep qi flowing downward, preventing coughing and resolving difficult breathing, and relaxing the bowels.

The seeds contain a fatty oil (consisting of linoleic and linolenic acid), along with vitamins and amino acids. They are used to treat coughs and phlegmy obstructions, and to aid in constipation. Perilla seed is often used in combination with apricot kernels and hemp seeds.
